Mile High Mardi Gras w/ Boukou Groove

Mark your calendars for February 16th, as Denver is in for an extraordinary Mardi Gras celebration featuring the soulful sounds of New Orleans’ very own BOUKOU GROOVE! The band has steadily toured the Gulf Coast region since their debut album in 2012,  “A Lil’ Boukou In Your Cup”, and lead singer Donnie Sundal was recently nominated for a Grammy for his work on Sam Bush’s album “Radio John: Songs of John Hartford”, adding a touch of star power and excitement to this awesome event!

Fresh off a series of Mardi Gras shows in their hometown, Boukou Groove will take the stage for an encore performance at one of Denver’s finest new establishments, Orchid: Social Cocktail & Lounge. Nestled in the heart of downtown, and serving up “dinner & show” packages on most nights, the venue plans to fully embrace the “Nola” atmosphere, with an optional cajun boil (while supplies last!) and stacked night of music for a truly unique experience in the Mile High City.

Many of you may remember, Boukou Groove played the first annual Rolling By The Bay Festival last October in Pensacola, and we have been HUGE fans ever since. Ahead of their Denver debut, we caught up with the band to delve into their plans for the performance and gain some insight into their trajectory for the rest of this year, as they continue to push the boundaries of funk, soul, and blues with their signature cajun grooves and energetic live show.

Give us a little background on the band.. What are the roots of your music and who do you consider your main influences?

Boukou Groove is a band with diverse musical influences. The sound falls somewhere between Nola funk and classic soul, as well as neo-soul. Some of our favorite artists are The Neville Brothers, Prince, Sly and The Family Stone, The Isley Brothers and D’Angelo, just to name a few!

Have you ever been to Colorado? What can we expect for the Mardi Gras party?

Members of the band have played at the Telluride Jazz Festival, however this is the first trip to Colorado as Boukou Groove. The Mardi Gras party will be a mixture of our original tunes blended with some New Orleans classics. One of our soon-to-be-recorded songs, “Back to New Orleans”, will definitely get played to connect Colorado and NOLA.

Do you have any plans while you’re in Denver besides the show?

We are coming into town midday on Thursday and leaving early Saturday, so we have limited time – but definitely planning on checking out some live music, finding a great local place to eat, and hopefully exploring Downtown Denver!

Where can people hear more to get a taste for what’s to come?

We have three records out on all platforms: A Lil’ Boukou In Your Cup, Let The Groove Ride, and Groovin’

As well as three singles: “Ain’t No Lie”, “Never Steal Our Thunder”, and “Goin’ With The Flow”

We are also on the main socials and you can follow us there!

What do you have planned for 2024 and beyond?

2024 promises to be an exciting year for us. The band is working on a new record plus more national and international tour dates. Beyond that – we are always in the studio writing and recording!
