A cornerstone of Denver’s music scene, DMVU has become a name synonymous with innovation in bass music. His groundbreaking release Bloccd, dropped nearly a decade ago on the revered Deep, Dark, and Dangerous label—a heavyweight in the dubstep world—cemented his legacy in the “140” genre. With its unmistakable sound and cultural impact, Bloccd remains a timeless classic, still finding its way into DJ’s sets all these years later.
For many pioneers, the journey itself often holds the most excitement—the thrill of venturing into the unknown. Over time, even the most familiar terrain can grow tiresome, prompting trailblazers like DMVU to carve new paths. For him, this meant diving into uncharted sonic territories, blending fresh sounds and textures to authentically evolve within the bass music scene. With a now-expansive discography that ranges from heavy and experimental to ambient and emotive, it’s clear that DMVU has traversed numerous creative routes to arrive at his distinct sound.
Which brings us to the brink of 2025, where after 10+ years of pushing the boundaries of bass music, we see yet another side of this masterful producers handiwork. Pulled from the vaults, this latest EP is a collaboration between renowned visual artist Dice51 and Misfit Media, demonstrating just how far his mind-bending production can be taken via five tracks of absolute sonic destruction, expertly-crafted to find space for every piece in its musical puzzle.
We had the chance to sit down with DMVU to delve into Blizzard of Eden—a release that goes beyond music to include limited-edition cassette tapes, handcrafted wood sculptures, and even signed, framed original artwork for one lucky collector. During our conversation, he shared insights on the project, gave us a glimpse into his future plans, revealed what’s been on his personal playlist lately, and offered valuable advice for up-and-coming producers looking to carve out their own path in the ever-evolving music scene.
The Interview
THIS EP TAKES QUITE A TURN FROM YOUR MOST RECENT WORK. TELL US MORE ABOUT THESE TUNES AND THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THEM.
So these tracks are actually much older! I wrote all of them over five years ago at this point, a couple of them maybe seven years ago. They have kind of been sitting there gathering dust and I figured it was time they saw the light of day. They were all black sheep tracks that didn’t make it onto other EP’s, so it kind of makes sense that they found a home with each other on Misfit Media. Also its such a cliche to say, but i think waiting for inspiration can really be a dead end. Sometimes you just have to get the paint on the canvas and hope the inspiration comes through that.
GIVEN YOUR ECLECTIC TASTE IN MUSIC, I’M CURIOUS WHO YOU ARE LISTENING TO AT THE MOMENT? WHO DO YOU THINK IS “NEXT” IN BASS MUSIC?
I’ve actually been on a pretty heavy footwork kick lately! Specifically username! They put out two albums in 2024 that are absolutely phenomenal. Also this is a given but Lord Genmu is always doing dope stuff. Aunty as well, for more hip-hop influenced stuff.
MANY PEOPLE REGARD YOU AS ONE OF THE MORE INNOVATIVE PRODUCERS IN THE SCENE. DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR OTHERS WHO ARE TRYING TO CARVE THEIR OWN PATH IN THIS INDUSTRY?
I think it’s more important to make something that sounds unique and not necessarily good, than something that is polished and sounds like everything else. I know that sounds a little backwards but I’d rather listen to something that could use some work that doesn’t sound like anything else, than some copy and paste preset song.
SPEAKING OF PRODUCTION, I KNOW YOU’RE AN FL STUDIO GUY, ANY GO-TO NATIVE (OR THIRD PARTY) PLUGINS THAT HAVE BEEN GAME-CHANGERS FOR YOU OR BECOME STAPLES IN YOUR TRACKS?
A big one for this EP and a lot of the bass music I write in general is fruity grainulizer! Any granular synth will do though! I also still get a lot out of dBlue Glitch and Turnado… Which at this point are almost legacy plug-ins!
WHAT DO YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR AND HEADING INTO 2025?
I have some really cool deep dubstep stuff in the works, as well as an entire tape of rap music flips I’m making! And obviously the shows with my boy Of The Trees!
SHOUT OUTS?
Shout out to Tyler, Jack, Kaya, Freddy Todd, Freddy my manager, Sam, Gino, my dad and my cat!
