Twizzled joins the label with fresh sounds and a brand-new album, Among Friends, dropping May 28th across all digital platforms. Balancing soulful, electro breaks and deep, wubby sound design, his latest work finds a unique lane that fans of Daily Bread, Pretty Lights, and Artifakts will appreciate. As he continues to hone his craft and push things forward, we thought it an ideal time to see what he’s been working on lately and what’s next for the project.
The Interview
Thanks for chatting with us! How long have you been producing electronic music?
I first downloaded a cracked version of Fruity Loops way back when I was like 13, but naturally didn’t make much progress with it. I started producing with Ableton and taking it seriously around 2015, so roughly 10 years ago.
Tell us more about this album.. What were the main inspirations and influence behind it?
This EP, a lot like my other releases are a bunch of abstract ideas tied together. Some make you sad, and others make you want to rage. I find a lot of inspiration from shows in the Denver area. “Wave Precision” for example was made immediately after Tipper‘s Fillmore run, specifically Matt Davis and Hacienda’s Reference Sessions. After hearing that system absolutely shatter the earth with sub-40hz bass, I was inspired to start branching into lower keys. A lot of the tracks on this EP are produced in D or E instead of my usual flavor of F. This also caused me to spend a lot of time working on my “sub bass”. I needed to bring out some higher harmonics without distorting the fundamental, and I learned a ton along the way.
What are some of your favorite VSTs used on “Among Friends”?
I’m pretty basic when it comes to VSTs honestly, I really strive to have less steps and GUIs in my workflow so I use a lot of stock Ableton. After that though, Serum 2 came out in the middle of making this EP so I’ve been experimenting a lot with that. I’ve also recently grown very fond of the simplicity in Ableton’s Simpler, no pun intended. My bread and butter for sparking ideas is flipping through jazz/blues samples on Simpler in slices mode just cutting things up.
Any advice for upcoming producers?
There’s so much to say here, but I think if I could go back and tell myself two things they would be: First, find a community of people making music similar to you and dig in. You’d be amazed at how much information and skill you can glean just from glancing at someone’s workflow. Second, just be patient and trust the process. I think it took about 5 years of making tracks frequently before my production skill started to match my music taste. If you’re not having fun doing this, then there’s really no point!
What’s on the horizon for the project in 2025 and beyond?
2025 is an exciting year for me, I’ve got a few events I’m involved in, the first being the upcoming show June 19th at Larimer Lounge with POP THA TRUNK and SAINT POND. Next, there’s the Keep the Dream Alive charity stream which will be happening in July. After that though I find myself wanting to really sit down and start working on my “magnum opus” (whatever that will be), so stay tuned!
