From his early days of making music as “Yukona”, to his most recent work as “Basura”, Kyle Green has been firmly rooted in the dubstep scene since the genre’s arrival in the United States. With a steady output of singles and EP’s, plus an extensive list of DJ gigs supporting some of the biggest names in the scene, the Basura project is primed to make a BIG impact in 2024. With several recent sold out vinyls and shows, it looks like things are taking off for this talented producer, and we couldn’t be more excited to be along for the ride.
Through his passion for dubstep and an unrelenting quest to perfect the craft, Basura has positioned himself ahead of the pack as he ushers “140 music” into a new era, combining old-school bass with new school aesthetics, to create a sound all his own. We caught up with him recently to discuss the future of the project, as well as how he goes about creating his tracks. He was also kind enough to give us a brand new tune to debut called “Need You”, so don’t miss that at the end!
The Interview
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT HOW THE BASURA PROJECT STARTED?
Since 2009 I’ve gone by Yukona. In 2017 my computer broke so I took a break from music… Come 2021, my buddy Will Giltner asked me why I wasn’t making music so I told him my situation. He was nice enough to give me an old laptop he had, and I started the Basura project just to see if I still had anything left in me… Come to find out things are going really well!
HAVE THERE BEEN ANY SPECIFIC ARTISTS OVER THE YEARS, OR MAYBE AN ALBUM, THAT HAD A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON YOUR SOUND?
I’d have to say a couple artists that have had a big impact on my sound are DMVU & Cartridge… What I love most about DMVU is his ability to manipulate any sound you throw his way into the next dance floor stomper. Cartridge uses melody [so well] and his mix downs are phenomenal!
I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE CURIOUS ABOUT HOW YOU MAKE BEATS… CAN YOU WALK US THROUGH YOUR TYPICAL CREATIVE PROCESS WHEN PRODUCING A NEW TRACK?
I always start out with either a melody or a sub bass… Once I get something I like or I can work with, I’ll move on to a quick drum pattern. Once I have a main idea I’ll make the intro… Move to 2nd drop, switch a few things up. Then once I have a full track layout, I’ll go back through and add little vocals or drum breaks, FX and stuff like that to help give the tune some character.
ARE THERE ANY PARTICULAR INSTRUMENTS, SYNTHS, OR PRODUCTION TOOLS THAT PLAY A CRUCIAL ROLE IN YOUR MUSIC? FAVORITE VST?
I play with Vital a bit but one thing I really like to use is a plug in called Grossbeat! It helps you make glitchy chops and stuff [that sound] really cool. Another one that’s really good is Turnado.
HOW DO YOU SEE THE GENRE EVOLVING, AND HOW DO YOU SEE YOURSELF FITTING INTO ITS PROGRESSION?
Well to be honest. I’m not sure what’s next for dubstep. It seems like everyone is starting to fall back into riddim and it just kinda makes me laugh… But I mean enjoy what you want! I’m hoping over the next few years I’m able to bring some new flavors to dubstep and just enjoy myself with it.
ANY NEW PRODUCERS YOU HAVE BEEN FEELING OR PLAYING IN SETS LATELY?
Oh absolutely, Wolf’d, D:Form, SEEK, and Chef Wamp have been steady making dance floor BOPS!
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOUR FUTURE PROJECTS? ANY UPCOMING RELEASES, TOURS, OR COLLABORATIONS YOU’D LIKE TO TEASE?
I’ve got lots of stuff planned, including a couple releases coming out this year… One being fairly soon on FatKidonFire. That will be an all “collab” EP called Basura & Friends. I’m really excited for everyone to hear these tracks!
I’ve also got a handful of dates across the US, and a Canadian tour with Oldgold being sorted for the end of the year. Also have a 4 track EP in the works with Hypho that is gonna be so dope, so I’m looking forward to getting that out as well.. For now enjoy this free drop of a recent tune I made called “Need You“!
