In the latest edition of our artist spotlight series, we direct our attention to a couple of our favorite west coast acts, Torbjørn and Nurries, to showcase their signature blend of bass and hip-hop via this exclusive interview and FREE download. The Interview
TELL US ABOUT HOW THIS COLLABORATION STARTED. WHEN DID YOU GUYS MEET?
We first met at Emissions Festival 2016, and connected through continuing to find each other at our favorite artists’ sets all throughout the weekend. Later that year, we reunited at a UBF New Year’s party on Maui with ill.Gates, and the rest was history!
YOU BOTH HAVE VERY DIVERSE STYLES AND TASTE. WHO HAVE BEEN YOUR MAIN INFLUENCES?
We share a lot of the same favorite artists, from UK legends Ivy Lab, P4VAN, and Alix Perez, to Canadian legends Stylust, ill.Gates and Def3, and beyond. Of course American music plays a big role as well; old schoolers like Wu Tang and new schoolers like Run the Jewels both find their way into our playlists. We try to bring the best of hip hop and the best of bass music, and weave it all together in our tracks.
LET’S TALK PRODUCTION. WHAT DOES YOUR SONGWRITING PROCESS LOOK LIKE? ANY FAVORITE VST’S OR TECHNIQUES YOU HAVE BEEN USING LATELY?
When we create together, it’s almost always vocals first over a very basic/skeleton beat. We want to put ourselves forward aS MCs first and producer/DJ second, so our songs are very lyric and vocal focused. Once we can feel the vibe of the track from the lyrical content, then I will usually take the stems back to my studio and the entire beat will get flipped and almost completely remade to add a drop, switch the vibe up to match the lyrics, or just to incorporate new ideas we came up with along the way.
WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE REST OF 2024?
Lots to look forward to… A busy festival season, Shambhala in Canada, European tour dates, Rolling By The Bay in Florida this September, as well as some pop-up dates in Hawaii this fall!
